Not a ghost story, but some spooky moments nonetheless. A cranky pop rock + alt-country-ish tune I wrote for FAWM 2008… …but only got around to recording this month. I’m probably going to re-mix this for a future album (I like to get all George Lucas with my tunes), so feedback is greatly appreciated.
Mean to Me by miss lynnster
Back to practicing new repertoire with my freakishly adorable guitarist Barry. Yay! Sooo, here’s a pretty straight and peppy little version of an old standard tune by Fats Waller. Note to the protagonist of the song: I know you’re long dead and all… and we’ve all been through it… but girl, don’t ever sit by the phone for some jerk who puts you down! Seriously. It’s kinda pathetic. Hate to be the bearer of harsh news but as the saying goes, he just wasn’t that into you.
Allergies by The Great Big Mulp
So, I was planning on recording my ukulele rendition of Holy Diver (yes, that one), but my allergies were acting up so I felt like crap. So, that’s what this song is about. And it’s NSFW. I didn’t really have any kind of plan while making this, but just kinda recorded myself playing drums for six or seven minutes, cut out about a minute that I could use, came up with a really simple chord progression (all barred chords, for added simplicity), and recorded … stuff. Also: I need to find some bass skills. Lyrics: all the pollen in the air all the dander in my rug sniffling and I don’t care feeling nasally unplugged allergies allergies allergies allergies fuck.
Demented Children’s Songs by csimpkins
A nightmarish take on children’s music. I always imagine myself stuck in a carnival funhouse being chased around by evil clowns when I listen to this. From 1995 and one of the first songs I ever wrote. Some completely out of control layering towards the end! Pardon the production quality. This was put together with an old school Casio knockoff midi keyboard being controlled by Jazz midi sequencer on my Windows 98 box when I knew almost nothing about what I was doing. Still don’t, really… but I smile just thinking about the old setup.
Pretorius by sleepy pete
a quick and dirty version of the monster’s reaction to promises. A lament for the most famous of the walking dead. Some Waxman implied.
Emma’s Song by cortex
A song I wrote in 2002 for a friend of mine, Emma Howell, after she drowned in Brazil. I made this recording in a neighbor’s basement studio, and it benefits a lot from that it’s much cleaner than the stuff I was recording myself at that point, and he had the good sense to keep me honest about not settling for a take I wasn’t happy with on any of the instruments. Even six years later, I think it’s one of the better recordings I’ve made. I’m not sure how I managed to not post it before. Emma was a poet and a dreamer and seemed to be or at least to want to be 18-going-on-40 for as long as I knew her. The two of us weren’t especially close, but she was a kind of social glue among some of my very good friends, and a charming and charismatic being in her own right a sort of nexus, not just for me I think but many people moving through that time and place in Portland. When I spoke at a memorial reading for her in the last year or so, it struck me how narrowly she managed to miss the era of social internet ubiquity—she had no internet paper trail; googling turned up very little about her other than some obituaries and news about a posthumous volume of her poetry. This, I guess, will be on of those little signposts in the road, marking out her life and death.
That’s All by miss lynnster
I’m jumping back into music with both feet right now, so here’s another rehearsal recording for your listening pleasure. This sweet tune was introduced by Nat King Cole back in 1952. You young whippersnappers probably remember it from elsewhere though. Sigh. The scritching noise you’ll hear through the first verse of the song is my little dog Zoe walking around in circles on the linoleum with a bone in her mouth, wondering how it could be possible that there was company visiting the house and yet nobody was playing with her. She eventually got over it.
Stevie by chococat
For Stephen. Kinda sloppy. I had this idea in my head after voting at lunch today. Had to record it fast before picking the kids up after school. All of you Canadians have voted already, right?
Thirty-seven Seconds by davejay
My wife went out of town, and she took our son with her. It was the middle of the night, and I was playing ukulele, hoping that I wouldn’t wake my daughter up. I was simultaneously watching the History of Heavy Metal on my TiVo, and started playing with complex chord progressions. I realized I was going to end up spending the whole night doing that, and that if I did I’d feel like crap in the morning. So I decided to write a song as quickly as I could, post it here, and then go to bed. This is that song. it may not go down in history as my best now I’m really thirsty
