Planetarium Disco by The World Famous
A synth experiment mostly. I got a new plug-in and wanted to try it out. Pro Tools, BFD2, Xpand!, Orca.
SkyMall (Jonathan Coulton cover) by hillelc
A few months ago I decided I wanted to try and do a cover. Based on the result, it was clearly a bad idea. I probably should have been discouraged but instead, after months of therapy, I decided to try again. The victim this time was one of my favorite artists - Jonathan Coulton and his excellent song SkyMall. The first few moments of the original have a very sweet quality. For this version I decided to try and extend that quality to the entire song by encasing it in a thick layer of vanilla frosting. Hopefully the result is something you ll enjoy. SkyMall (Jonathan Coulton cover), Sugar Fix
Heist Scene by AppleSeed
An old favorite genre of film, and part of every good spy flick, is the Heist, the soundtrack to which always goes like this. This scene from our “movie for the ears” music challenge is described inside. METROPOLIS AT NIGHT. Our hero is airlifted to the roof of a glass-and-steel office tower where, inside of 1′15″, he neutralizes the guards, slips past the incredibly sensitive security system, and replaces the secret plans of the enemy with a silly FAX joke. He dons the tux planted inside the elevator emergency panel, arriving stylishly late - but not late enough for anyone to suspect his true identity - for the lavish party in the mezzanine where he catches the eye of the ingenue from across the room. I used sound FX from the public library, but still had to be my own Foley artist. Around 1′33″ you can just barely hear a voice say, “photographic evidence? I swear I saw it on MetaFilter!” The plot thickens.
Misty by danb
Solo guitar. One quick and dirty take, recorded with the windows open. Still working out the details of this arrangement. I’ve never been terribly good at these chords-and-melody things, but I’m getting better (I hope!). Someday I hope to post something like The White Hat’s cover of Hide and Seek. See also chrismear’s fantastic sax and piano version of Misty.
Touching Down by eyeballkid
Part one of a three part sci-fi inspired thing.
Whiskey Pearl by mediocre
Mostly an experiment in banjo, trying to apply the clawhammer style to a more bluegrass style song. I’m not a big fan of bluegrass (too fast, flashy, too impersonal) but felt like screwing around with a couple train-a-comin drum loops and some acoustic instruments. I’m satisfied with the sound, and think the clawhammer fits in well with the otherwise modern (in comparison to my mountain clawhammer style anyways) song style..
Pacific Street (Hem Cover) by eyeballkid
My favorite Hem song. It was first an outtake from Rabbit Songs then later a track on Eveningland. I have excuses for the quality: 1) I’m drunk. 2) I’m using a shitty usb headset mic with and I’m getting over a cold so I sound pretty nasal. 3) The original is much better on piano, unfortunately I play guitar. 4) This is the first time I’ve used GarageBand to record anything. 5) I’m drubk. Other than that, I like how it turned out.
